Assam: 22 thousand girl students to get free scooties

GUWAHATI: Under Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award of Pragyan Bharati scheme, over 22 thousand girl students of Assam will get free scooties from the state government. Assam education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday distributed free scooties to the meritorious girl students of Baksa district who had passed higher secondary (HS) final exams in the first division under the Assam Higher Secondary Eduication Council in 2020.

Around 500 girl students from Baksa district have been found eligible to receive the award.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sarma highlighted the Assam government’s initiatives to promote female education in the state.

Along with minister Sarma, BJP national general secretary and MP Dilip Saikia, MP Naba Kumar Sarania also attended the scooter distribution programme. 

The flagship scheme was launched on December 20 at a programme at Amingaon in Kamrup district by Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Under the Pragyan Bharati scheme, total Rs. 144.30 crore will be spent to provide scooties to 22245 girl students to make their journey in the pursuit of knowledge smoother.

While, 22034 students have opted for petrol-driven scooter, 211 girl students have chosen battery-driven scooter.
