GUWAHATI, Dec 17: The Supreme Court will hear nearly two dozen petitions against the amended Citizenship Act on Wednesday, including the ones filed by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Lawyers’ Association (AALA), Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrat Saikia and Congress leaders — MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaleque.
The AGP, it is learnt, has also filed separate petitions in the apex court challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The AGP petitions will also come up for hearing tomorrow.
“The petitions challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act were listed in court on Monday and will come up for hearing on Wednesday (Dec 18),” AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath told News Live from New Delhi.
“The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) has also filed a writ petition against CAA in Supreme Court. We have faith on the judiciary and are optimistic that the apex court will give us justice,” he added.
Meanwhile, protests continued across Assam against the Act with the AASU continuing its mass protest — the ‘Gana Satyagraha’ — in Guwahati and in other parts of the State. Thousands of people joined the protests raising slogans against the State and the Central government.
“We will continue to protest against the amended Citizenship Act. The government cannot impose the bill on us. Our democratic struggle will continue,” a protester told News Live in Guwahati.
The AJYCP also continued its 36-hour agitation against the Act.
