GUWAHATI, Jan 1: The loss in the fourth Test at Melbourne for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has reportedly opened a can of worms for the Indian team with the visiting dressing room reportedly descending into chaos and head coach Gautam Gambhir making his unhappiness clear with some blunt assessment of the players’ performance in the series.
Apart from the below-par performance, the focus has also been on the captaincy of skipper Rohit Sharma and whether he should continue, given the team’s performance and his own personal form which has been wretched to say the least.
As the debate rages on, The Indian Express has reported that a senior player is open to projecting himself as the “interim captain” in the event the axe falls on Rohit Sharma.
“The aforementioned senior member who harbours a desire to be the interim captain, is actively portraying himself as ‘Mr Fix-It’ and it has been learnt that he isn’t convinced that the young guns are ready to take over leadership roles,” The Indian Express reported.
Although they did not name the player, the obvious pointer has been towards Virat Kohli, who had been a very good leader, especially in the longest format of the game.
There are also reports that Rohit, following the intense scrutiny on his performance and leadership, might also take a call on his international career after the Australia tour, having already hung his boots after the T20 world cup triumph.
