GUWAHATI: Kamakhya Devalaya is all set to perform all rituals related to Ambubachi from Monday. Ambubachi started at 7.53 AM (pravritti) on June 22 (Monday) and will conclude (Nivritti) on June 25 (Thursday) at 8.16 PM.

In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the yearly Ambubachi Mela that attracts lakhs of visitors has been canceled. The Devalaya authorities have banned the entry of sadhus, sanyasis, and devotees to the temple premises.

The doors of the temple have been closed from today and will reopen on June 25. The managing committee is also not going to hold any Mela (fair) this year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Every year, Ambubachi Mela attracts lakhs of devotees including tourists, but it is totally opposite this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country. To keep the people of Assam safe we decided to skip the mela this year. So we will just carry out the religious rituals,” said an official of Kamakhya Devalaya.

For the first time, silence has gripped the Devalaya which is always abuzz with the presence of devotees throughout the year. “It is an unusual situation for all of us. We have never seen such a scene in our life. The reason is COVID-19,” said a priest.
