GUWAHATI, Dec 4: Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked by a former Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The attacker, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, opened fire at Badal who was sitting in his wheel-chair at the entrance of the Golden Temple after suffering a leg fracture. The attacker was overpowered by other people present at the temple entrance and was later handed over to the police.
When Narain Singh Chaura opened fire at Sukhbir Badal, a volunteer — locally called a ‘sewadar’ — standing nearby pushed his hand toward up, thus saving the Akali Dal leader.
Chaura is said to be the mastermind o Burail jail break of 2004.
Sukhbir Singh Badal has been at the Golden Temple to perform the duty of a ‘sewadar’ outside the Golden Temple under ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment).
