Ajit Bhuyan flatters Ajmal: Dilip Saikia, Prasanta Phukan condemn

GUWAHATI: Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan invited condemnation from Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia and MLA Prasanta Phukan after Bhuyan praised AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal saying that there is no issue with the AIUDF supremo of becoming the chief minister of Assam. The journalist-turned-politician also compared Ajmal with two luminaries of Assamese literature—Syed Abdul Malik and Imran Shah.

Reacting to Bhuyan’s remarks, BJP national general secretary and MP Dilip Saikia said, “This comment of MP Ajit Bhuyan is not unexpected. Because, everyone knows him as the Congress-backed AIUDF MP. It is normal for him to flatter his leader. They have a dream to make Ajmal chief minister of Assam.”

On the other hand, Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan also criticised Ajit Kumar Bhuyan for comparing Maulana Badruddin Ajmal with Syed Abdul Malik and Imran Shah, two revered personalities of Assamese literature.

“How can a literate person like Ajit Bhuyan can compare Ajmal with Syed Abdul Malik and Imran Shah? Bhuyan is giving ‘Guru Dakshina’ to Ajmal for making him MP,” Phukan said.

Earlier on Saturday at a meeting at Sivasagar Press Club, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan said, “If Abdul Malik and Imran Shah can become presidents of Asom Sahitya Sabha, why a Muslim like them cannot be the CM of Assam.”

“If 1951 is taken as the cut-off year for detection of foreigners, then Badruddin Ajmal will not be identified as a foreigner,” he added.
