Air India plane crash ends doctor couple’s London dreams

PUBLISHED:

A doctor couple along with their three children had boarded the Air India flight that was supposed to take them to London where a new dawn was waiting for them. But the London dream ended in tragedy with all five killed in the terrible mishap

The tragic Air India plane crash on Tuesday, the worst civil aviation disaster in India’s history, has claimed the lives of 241 people onboard the ill-fated aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner after it crashed seconds after taking-off.

The sole survivor was 40-year-old British national of Indian origin Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who managed to escape from seat 11A near an emergency exit.

The crash has brought to the fore several heart-wrenching stories, including that of a doctor couple whose London dream ended in tragedy.

Young medical professionals Dr Komi Vyas and Dr Prateek Joshi wouldn’t have imagined, even in their wildest dream, that a smiling selfie Dr Prateek took on Air India flight AI-171 with their three children — eight-year-old daughter Miraya and twin sons Nakul and Pradyut (5) — minutes before the plane took-off would be their last selfie.

The doctor couple used to work together at Pacific Hospital in Udaipur, Rajasthan, when, six years ago, Dr Prateek decided to move to London to give his wife and their children a better future.

After years of planning and paperwork, it appeared the dream was finally coming true. Dr Komi Vyas also resigned from her job recently, and London seemed to be calling them with open arms.

On the ill-fated day yesterday, all five of them boarded the Air India flight 171 to London and Dr Prateek took the selfie on his phone and sent it to relatives.

They had hoped to be in the British capital a few hours later. But they never made it: the plane crashed and none of them survived, turning a lifetime of dreams into ash.

“Prateek had come home just two days ago to take his wife and children with him. The entire family is now dead,” a relative said.
