Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad and bound for London crashed in Meghani Nagar area of the city shortly after it took off.
The flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had 242 people — 230 passengers and 12 crew members — on board.
Visuals showed thick black smoke rising up into the sky from the airport.
The exact casualty figure is not known while around 90 passengers are reported to have survived the crash. Visuals showed passengers, many with burn injuries, being rushed to hospital from the airport.
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025,” Air India said in a statement, and added: “At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on our website and on our X handle.”
The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar.
A video, which has gone viral on social media, captured the moment when the Air India aircraft went down and burst into flames.
Unconfirmed reports also said that former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani may have been among the passengers of the Air India flight that crashed. A confirmation is, however, awaited.
Flight operations have been suspended at Ahmedabad airport after the crash.
