GUWAHATI: The Rs. 1200-crore All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati, located at Changsari will open its doors for service by the end of this year. Barring a few construction delays the project will be ready for operations.
Almost 85 per cent of the work has been completed at the site. AIIMS Guwahati will be opened up for the general public in another six months. Though the COVID19 pandemic created some problems in construction, but right now, the work at the site is at full swing.
“Work for first phase that includes the Medical College and the OPD (Out Patient Department) block is 85 per cent complete. We will try to inaugurate it by November last week or December first week. Simultaneously, hostel and housing work is progressing in the first phase and will be ready by November-December. Ancillary buildings like sub-stations, service stations, laundry, shopping- complex are getting the finishing touches. Mechanical jobs for air-conditioning, fire-fighting, electrical are being done. The civil work part is fully completed. Once the mechanical work is done the buildings will get operational,” said an official working on the AIIMS Guwahati project.
Built under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana the total area under construction at AIIMS Guwahati is 24 lakh square feet that includes the In-patient Department (IPD). The IPD block is in civil construction stage and will be operational next year said the official.
The first academic programme of AIIMS Guwahati started from 12th January this year. With 125 MBBS seats, the 750-bedded hospital will have multiple specialty and super specialty departments.
