Ahead of 2nd phase polls, war of words gets bitter

PUBLISHED:

As campaigning for the second and third phase of elections in Assam gets intense, the war of words between rival political parties and candidates has also got bitter. While rival candidates continue to trade guns on each other during the campaign trail, bickering between former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his successor, Chief Minister Sarbannada Sonowal, has only intensified.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, on Saturday, lambasted the State Government yet again, calling Sonowal “spineless” and termed him “utterly corrupt”.

“He is corrupt. Had he not been corrupt, how can he campaign from the length and breadth of the State using a chopper?” Gogoi said.

He also slammed Himanta Biswa Sarma and accused him of polluting the political atmosphere.

The former three-term Assam chief minister further targeted Prime Minister Modi and said his popularity has come down besides accusing him of ruling the country like a dictator.

Chief Minister Sonowal, on the other hand, hit back at Gogoi saying Assam has achieved so much under Prime Minister Modi.

“Earlier Assam used to draw the centre’s attention only by resorting to agitations. But now, there’s no need to resort to demonstration and agitation. PM Modi has gifted people the Dhola-Sadiya bridge,” CM Sonowal said at Dipila in Darang while campaigning for BJP’s Mangaldoi candidate Dilip Saikia.

He also raked the former chief minister’s famous rant — ‘Baad Dia He’ — and said Gogoi was making baseless accusations on him and the BJP-led alliance to only cover up mistakes he made as chief minister of the State.

Meanwhile, NEDA Chairman and Assam Finance, Health and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also attacked the former chief minister during election rallies in the Barak Valley.
