The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Monday pushed the ball to the nation BJP’s court in so far as the alliance between the two parties is concerned, reiterating that the party will pull out of the government the moment the latter goes ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and tables it in Parliament. The AGP has written to BJP national president Amit Shah in which Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta, signatories of the letter, reiterated their stand on the citizenship bill stating that “the Asom Gana Parishad is fully committed to the implementation of the provisions of the Assam Accord and hence we can never support the obnoxious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016”.

“If the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is intended to be passed in the Parliamentwe will have no other alternative except to repudiate the existing alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party,” the letter further stated.
The AGP requested the BJP national president “to take necessary steps for withdrawing the obnoxious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, so that the said bill is not placed in Parliament at any point of time.”

“Our stand has been clear from the very start. We are against the citizenship bill and if the BJP, despite our opposition, goes ahead with it and tables it in Parliament, we will have no other option but to walk out of the alliance,” Atul Bora told News Live at the party headquarters at Ambari in Guwahati.
