The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today (Dec 8) hinted at snapping ties with the BJP and a formal decision in this regard will be taken by the party leadership after the end of the panchayat elections. AGP MLAs Ramendra Narayan Kalita and Satyabrata Kalita told News Live that it won’t be possible for the party to continue with the alliance in the wake of mounting criticism by BJP leaders, particularly Himanta Biswa Sarma and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
“There can’t be any question of continuing our alliance with BJP, particularly in the wake of the recent developments. Our party leadership will have to sit down and discuss the future course of action,” Ramendra Narayan Kalita told News Live, adding that they could sever ties with the BJP at any moment.
“There is no atmosphere to continue the alliance any further. Our party leaders will meet after the panchayat elections are over and the results declared and will take a formal decision,” AGP leader and Kamalpur MLA Satyabrata Kalita said.

The AGP had earlier decided to continue with the alliance after the BJP launched a vitriolic attack on it on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill but hinted that they could sever ties at any moment.
Meanwhile, Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said he has written a letter to party president Amit Shah and will personally meet him and apprise him of the developments with regards to the alliance with the AGP.
“The alliance between the AGP and the BJP was struck by our central leadership. So it’s the top national leaders who can take a final decision on severing ties with the BJP. I have already written a detailed letter to our national president Amit Shah and will personally meet him and apprise him of the developments,” the Assam State BJP president said.
