After one year in Pakistan jail, Assam’s fisherman to return home

GUWAHATI: Simanta Saikia, a resient of Merapani under Assam’s Golaghat district is all set to return to his home after more than one year of imprisonment in a Pakistani jail.

It needs to be mentioned that Pakistan released  20 Indian fishermen on Sunday including Assam’s Simanta who were arrested by the Maritime Security Agency for allegedly violating Pakistani territorial waters on October 28 last year. They were lodged in Malir district jail in Lahore.

According to reports, after their release, the fishermen were handed over to the Indian authorities at the Wagah border. 

The family members of Simanta Saikia are overjoyed after they have received the news of release of the fisherman  yesterday. The parents and wife of Simanata are waiting eagerly for his arrival at home.

“We are really happy today. My son has been released after almost 13 months he was arrested by Pakistani maritime security agency. He even didn’t see his newborn son,” said father of Simanta Saikia.
