The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 30 indigenious organizations today (Jan 23) staged a massive protest at the Latasil playground in Guwahati opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and reiterating that it will continue protests unless the government scraps the controversial legislation.

AASU activists, representatives of 30 indigenous organizations along with thousands of people assembled together to oppose the legislation that has already been tabled and later passed by Lok Sabha and is likely to be tabled in the upper house of Parliament in the next session that begins from Jan 31.

The meeting that was named the ‘Khilonjiar Bajra Ninnad’ began at 11 am with leaders of the AASU and other frontal organizations, eminent litterateurs and writers, educationists, journalists, artistes, singers and students expressing solidarity to oppose the legislation.

“We can never accept any legislation that supports awarding citizenship to Bangladeshi nationals, irrespective of what their religion is. Hindu or Muslims, Bangladeshi nationals entering Assam after March 25, 1971, will have to go,” AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyaa told News Live.
