AASU is now a political party: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Taking a dig at All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), senior BJP leader and Assam finance minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the AASU as a political party.

“AAU is a political party. Let them do their work,” Sarma lashed out on the AASU.

Ahead of the Assam assembly elections, the regional political party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) was formed under the patronage of AASU and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP). Former AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi left the students’ body to become the president of AJP.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi is contesting from Duliajan and Naharkatia in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

Meanwhile, in the recent executive meeting of the AASU, the organisation decided to support the regional forces in the assembly elections. The students’ body opted to strengthen the regional forces in the state.
