Assam DGP announces CID probe into Assam CM’s distorted viral ‘Brut’ video

PUBLISHED:

Assam Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh has directed the CID to register a case in connection with the video where fake assertions are attributed to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and catch the people behind it.

Earlier, in a cheap attempt to influence public opinion as elections approach, vested interest groups have resorted to circulating fake videos of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media.

The orchestrated misinformation campaign involves distorting the Chief Minister’s statements to portray them as anti-Christian, creating a wave of communal disharmony.

Taking to X formerly known as Twitter CM Sarma wrote, “See for yourself, as elections approach, how vested groups distort a speech with the criminal intention of spreading disinformation and communal disharmony. The long arms of the law will catch up with these elements.”

In the distorted video, the CM’s remarks on Congress’s stance on Udhaynidhi Stalin’s “Sanatana Dharma must be eradicated” comment have been edited to insinuate that Sarma is calling for the annihilation of Islam and Christianity. However, in the original video, he was questioning the duplicity of the Congress party, an alliance partner of Stalin’s DMK.

“Stalin’s aim to eradicate Sanatana Dharma is not his goal alone. The Congress party also shared the same objective as they defended his remark as “Freedom of Speech.” I want to ask the Congress party if I call to eradicate Islam or Christianity tomorrow, will the Congress party defend it as my freedom of speech,” he had said in the original video.

Expressing discontentment, CM Sarma said that this was malicious attempt to tarnish his image.

He urged the public to scrutinise the distorted video themselves, emphasising that as the elections draw near, such criminal intent to spread disinformation becomes more prevalent.

The Chief Minister further vowed that the long arms of the law would catch up with those responsible for spreading false narratives.

The fake video which aimed to tarnish the image of CM Sarma elicited swift response from Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh.

In response to CM Sarma’s social media post, DGP Singh assured the initiation of a criminal case by CID Assam and vowed to investigate the individuals behind this misleading campaign.
