Days after a leopard was hacked to death — its eyes gouged out, paws and tail cut and the corpse hung from a pole — near Sonari in Charaideo district Friday (May 31), another big cat has been killed by villagers near Nazira in Sivasagar district today (June 5).
The leopard had attacked and injured three persons following which villagers, armed with bamboo sticks and other crude weapons, hacked it to death.
People also accused Forest officials of not doing enough to trap the leopard alive despite registering several complaints with the local forest office.
Forest officials later recovered the carcass and sent it for a post-mortem.
