Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party along with its grand alliance has set a target of 103 seats for the upcoming Assam assembly election in 2021. The party has already launched many programmes with its aim of keeping the opposition at bay in the soon to be held assembly elections. BJP Assam has made its claim open of returning to power with a large majority.
In a nutshell, the ruling party has set the stage for winning more seats than in the 2016 Assembly elections. Amid very favorable conditions in 2016, with the Congress government facing huge anti-incumbency and the Modi wave at its peak, the saffron party yet could not achieve its desired target of forming the government all alone. With the help of allies – Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) – the BJP had to form the government at Dispur.
State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass explained how the BJP will fulfill its target of 103 seats in the upcoming election. In a press conference held at the state BJP headquarters in Hengrabari, the state BJP president pointed out the equation of 103 seats and said, “BJP’s target was 100+ but this time our target is 103 seats. Of the 103 seats, nine will be grabbed from the Congress-AIUDF and BJP already has 61 seats.”
“Our allies have 26 seats and in total, the alliance has 87 seats. As per the calculation, the BJP will this time win nine Congress-held seats. The seats are Golaghat, Sarupathar, Nazira, Titabor, Mariani, Sibsagar, Dumduma, Naobaicha and Karimganj North – all these are new to the BJP and the party is targeting to win these 9 seats. Moreover, the BJP is positive of winning 7 minority dominated seats this time,” said Ranjeet Kumar Dass.
It is pertinent to note that the BJP, which has adopted a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the party’s position in Upper Assam is preparing its party program for the coming two months.
The ruling party has shifted its focus to North Assam, Upper Assam and Barak Valley seats for possible wins.
The party has already prepared special tactics to capture most of the seats in Golaghat, Jorhat, Sibasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Darang districts. It has set a special agenda in November and December for uprooting Congress and AIUDF from these seats.
President Dass said, “The unprecedented changes that the state government led by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonawal has made in the last four-and-a-half years have not been possible even during the 15 years of Congress tenure. In these four-and-a-half years, 6 medical colleges have been set up, 19,000 km of roads have been constructed, more than one lakh Bhumiputras (Indigenous Assamese people) have been given land pattas (rights), 18 lakh people have been given old-age pensions and 19 lakh have been benefited through the Arunodaya scheme. Therefore, this development will be the key to winning the elections.”
At a time when the Congress and the Opposition have been holding meetings in the name of forming alliances, the ruling party has started preparations for the elections at the grassroots level. The state BJP president has taken up the issue and reaffirmed that the party will definitely win 103 seats in the upcoming election.
