GUWAHATI: Amid row over Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed’s proposal to construct a Miya Museum at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati, Assam health, finance and education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that no such museum would be allowed at Kalakshetra.

“My view is straight that there will be no Miya Museum at Sankardeva Kalakshetra till the Assamese people exist in Assam,” Dr. Sarma said.

He stated that the Assam Government would not allow the construction of Miya Museum at Sankardeva Kalakshetra, the epitome of Assamese culture which was established as a part of the historic Assam Accord.

The proposal of Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed to construct a museum reflecting the culture and lifestyle of the Miya community angered several indigenous organisations and many prominent personalities of the state.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai also opposed the proposal.

“He (Sherman Ali Ahmed) has raised the issue only to get votes. What this MLA has done for the said community? He has communalised the issue for votes,” Nath said.

“AJYCP has clearly said that we don’t want Miya Museum to be constructed at Sankardeva Kalakshetra,” AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai said.
