‘Bordoisila’ lashes Assam, leaves trail of devastation

PUBLISHED:

A severe cyclonic storm — locally called ‘Bordoisila’ that is usually experienced at this time of the year — lashed several parts of Assam, uprooting trees and electricity poles and blowing away tin roofs across the State. The heavy rain was accompanied by gushing wind with galls up to 60 kilometres per hour or even more at many places in central and lower Assam.

Several houses in central and lower Assam were damaged by the storm.

The storm also played spoilsport in Rongali Bihu celebrations damaging pandals and forcing singers to wind up their performances.

The Bihu pandals at Latashil, Chandmari, Maligaon, Noonmati and at many other places across the State suffered damages during the storm that began around 2:45 am.

Several families are reportedly left without a shelter over their heads as the gall blew away tin roofs and damaged houses.

There have also been reports of people picking up injuries.

No loss of life has, however, been reported from any place in Assam so far. Electricity connection remains cut off at many places, including various parts of Guwahati, even today.
