In a historic moment for people of Assam and the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (Dec 25) dedicated the Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge to the nation. Prime Minister Modi, who arrived at the Mohanbari Airport around 1:30 pm, then took a chopper ride to the South bank of the bridge in Dibrugarh.

The Prime Minister was received at the airport by Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

PM Modi and his huge fleet of convoy then made its way from the helipad to the south entrance of the bridge where he formally inaugurated the 4.94-km-long bridge that happens to be the longest rail-cum-road bridge in India.
Prime Minister Modi then took a ride across the bridge, as he waved to the people while taking a walk for some hundred metres and then rode in a car carrying the Doordarshan TV crew.

Prime Minister Modi addressed a large gathering at Kareng Chapori on the south end of the bridge and said his government is committed to ringing about development in the Northeast. Quoting Bhupen Hazarika’s immortal song ‘Maha Bahu Brahmaputra Maha Milonor Tirtha…’ in his speech, he greeted the people on the upcoming Magh Bihu besides also wishing them on the occasion of Christmas and the New Year.

Prime Minister Modi further claimed his government is harping on the slogan ‘Transformation Through Transportation’ and said what previous Congress governments could not do in 70 years, his government has done it in four and a half years.
Apart from Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Railway MoS Rajen Gohain, Assam Finance, Health & PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, other BJP MPs, MLAs and senior government officials were present at the Bogibeel inauguration ceremony.
