GUWAHATI: One more person from Goalpara district has tested COVID-19 positive. With this the total number of cases in Assam reached 37. This is the second case reported today. Earlier, a girl from neighbouring  Bongaigaon district tested COVID-19 positive. Both the patients are secondary contacts of attendees of Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi. Currently, there are total 9 active cases in Assam.Â
“Alert ~ A person from Goalpara district, secondary contact of a Markaz attendee, has tested #COVID positive. The number of #COVID19 patients in Assam now stands at 37. Active hospital cases 9. Update at 3:45 pm / April 28,” Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Twitter.
It needs to be mentioned that Goalpara district has already been categorised as Red Zone. It has reported a total 5 cases so far. All of these cases are directly or indirectly related to Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin Markaz. With 9 patients, Golaghat district has reported highest number of cases. On the other hand Morigaon, Nalbari and Dhubri reported 6 and 4 cases respectively. Meanwhile, the lone case in Bongaigaon district was detected today. Bongaigaon shares its border with two Red Zone districts-Dhubri and Goalpara. The girl who tested COVID-19 positive in Bongaigaon is also a secondary contact of a Tablighi Jamaat attendee.Â
Among the total 37 cases in Assam, 27 have already been discharged from the hospitals in different parts of the state. On the other hand, one person from southern Assam Hailakandi district died at Silchar Medical College on April 10. Though 27 patients have been discharged from the hospitals after they had recovered completely, the first patient from the state is yet to be discharged. Jamaluddin, a 52-year old man from Karimganj district tested COVID-19 positive at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on March 31. The person is also battling with Cancer and Diabetes.Â
