Breaking: 16 year Bongaigaon girl tests COVID-19 positive, tally rises to 36 in Assam

GUWAHATI: A 16 year girl from lower Assam’s Bongaigaon district has tested COVID-19 positive taking the state’s tally to 36. The girl is the secondary contact of a NIzamuddin Markaz attendee, informed Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Twitter. Currently there are 8 active cases in Assam. Among the total 36 patients, one man from Hailakandi district died on April 10.

“Alert ~ A 16-year-old girl from Salmara Bongaingaon, secondary contact of a Markaz attendee, has tested #COVID positive. The number of #COVID19 patients in Assam now stands at 36. However active hospital cases are 8. Update at 12:20 pm / April 28,” minister Sarma Tweeted.

This is the first COVID-19 case from Bongaigaon district. Though neighbouring Goalpara and Dhubri districts reported COVID-19 cases and both the districts were declared as red zone, Bongaigaon district remained unaffected by Coronavirus. Till now 27 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from different hospitals in Assam after they had completely recovered from the disease.

On the other hand, the Assam Government has allowed opening of shops in rural areas under non-red zones from today. The government allowed opening of standalone rural shops barring hat and marketplaces. On the other hand, restrictions in red zone districts are still in place.  Similarly no rural shops have been allowed within 5 KM from the boundary of red zone districts. The five red zone districts in Assam are Dhubri, Goalpara, Nalbari, Morigaon and Golaghat.
