GUWAHATI: A broad consensus on the extension of the lockdown emerged out of a four hour, ten- minute video conference between prime minister Narendra Modi and chief ministers of states from across the country on COVID-19. It is learnt that the present lockdown will be continued for at least two more weeks, and even then not entirely lifted, but a staggered exit strategy will be put in place, depending on circumstances prevalent at the time.
Three weeks ago, while announcing the lockdown, PM Modi had said, “Jaan hai toh jahaan hai (the world exists if life exists).” Towards the end of the meeting today, however, he stressed on “Jaan bhi jahaan bhi (both life and economy are important)” as the lockdown has put severe stress on businesses.
According to the sources, lockdown rules will be relaxed in some specific fields. First and second grade employees are likely to attend office regularly. On the other hand, 50% rotational system will be applicable for third and fourth grade employees. The same rule will be applicable to private sector offices.
Though industries including tea gardens will be allowed to function, they will have to follow social distancing strictly.
The districts in every state will be divided into three zones according to their vulnerability. A district with 10 COVID19 patients will be declared as red zone. Yellow and Green Zones will be declared accordingly.
However classes of educational institutes will remain suspended. Cinema halls, shopping malls, parlours, restaurants, saloons are likely to shut down. Public functions will not be allowed during this period.
On the other hand, the authorities may allow to open vegetables and meat shops based on the vulnerability of the concerned district.
Inter-district transport is likely to remain suspended during the extended lockdown. Public transport will also be suspended.
