Provincialisation of services of 20,288 teachers, 5651 institutions soon: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: The Assam government will soon provincialise the services of teachers of various Venture Educational Institutions functioning in Higher Education, Secondary Education and Elementary Education in the state. This was stated by Assam Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during the Assam Budget 2020-21 on Friday.

The Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government has received a proposal of provincialisation of 5,651 institutions and 20,288 teachers from the education department. The government has allocated Rs. 372 crore for provincialisation.

What is Provincialisation?

“Provincialisation” means taking over the liabilities for payment of salaries including dearness allowance, medical allowances and such other allowances to the teachers and/or tutors, as admissible to the Government servant of similar category and gratuity, pension, leave encashment, etc., as admissible, under the existing rules to the Government servants serving under the Government of Assam;

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during his Budget speech said that as per the Assam Education (Provincialisation of Services of Teachers and Re-organisation of Educational Institutions) Act, 2017, Assam Government has decided to provincialise all the teachers working in Assam. The objective is to restrict any further growth of such Venture e Educational Institutions in the State of Assam.

Services of teachers currently working in Venture Schools including Additional Teachers and Temporary Employed Teachers will be provincialised soon.

As per the Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement, 32 colleges and 1,516 teachers will be benefited by this step.

Services of 2,538 teachers of 358 high schools, 1,588 teachers of 154 senior secondary/junior college and 768 teachers of 114 Higher Secondary Schools, 414 Additional Teachers of Drop Out Colleges will be provincialised.

Elementary education department’s 7,806 teachers of 2,298 upper primary schools, 5,556 teachers of 2,695 lower primary schools will also be benefitted by this provincialisation.
