Guwahati: The top five winners of this year’s ‘Pragya Sundari’ selfie contest are Rimli Bhuyan from Biswanath Chariali, Himashrita Saikia from Biswanath Chariali, Gungun Talukdar from Guwahati, Tina Kashyap from Nalbari and Chandana Deb from Dibrugarh.
Every year, leading Assamese news channel News Live organizes a beauty contest on the occasion of Saraswati Puja. The objective is to encourage the elegance and beauty of Assamese girls (students from school, college and educational institutions) in traditional Saree or Mekhela Chador (attire). The contestants were asked to click a selfie and send it to the channel’s number.
In the first round, 20 girls were selected based on the selfies sent by the students from all over Assam. The second round narrowed the beauties to 10 and the final round had 5 winners.
Speaking to News Live Rimli Bhuyan from Biswanath Chariali said, “I am very much happy and thankful to News Live channel for selecting me as one of winners of ‘Pragya Sundari’. I never thought of winning such a contest and I wish that such contests will be organised in the future also.”
Another winner from Biswanath Chariali, Himashrita Saikia said, “It is dream come true. For me, Saraswati Puja comes with ‘Pragya Sundari’ and wearing traditional cloths like Mekhela Chador is mandatory. I have no word to express my happiness being one of the winners of this contest. I am thankful to each and everyone from News Live who have given us a platform to showcase our tradition.”
Gungun Talukdar from Guwahati said, “I went to Balaji with my friends and there I got to know that I am one of the winners of ‘Pragya Sundari’. My friends started calling me over phone and congratulated me. I had no idea about it. This is the first time I have participated in such a contest and I am overwhelmed. I have never imagined winning the ‘Pragya Sundari’ contest.”
