GUWAHATI: On Sunday evening the Paltan Bazar police carried out an operation and nabbed two ATM con artists from South Sarania area, Guwahati.
The modus operandi of these criminals was to make use of those ATMs that were used mostly by ladies and elderly people. Then in the guise of helping to withdraw or deposit money, these conmen used various tactics to extract money from the victims.
The accused were identified as Mohammad Azaruddin, a resident of Bharatpur Rajasthan and Azad Khan from Haryana.
According to the investigation officer of the Palatan Bazar police station, “The two accused have been residing on rent for some time and were operating within the city. These fraudsters would rent a bike and used to roam about the city in search of easy targets. They basically targeted women and senior citizens. Once inside the ATM booth, these fraudsters somehow exchanged the original ATM cards of the victims with their duplicate ATM cards. They have looted a lot of money this way in Guwahati.”
The Assam Police seized 56 different ATM cards, 2 mobile phones and recovered ₹ 4,500 cash from the accused.
The Paltan Bazar police have started the interrogation to obtain further information from these fraudsters.
