GUWAHATI, Nov 28: The Assam Government has for the first time gone on record, admitting about a massive multi-crore-rupee scam taking place in the implementation of the NRC update. Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that a massive scam did take place and that it has come to light in findings by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in its report.
The financial anomalies is said to be around Rs 1600 crore.
“There has been an inspection report by the Accountant General of Assam confirming that a huge financial scam took place in the NRC update process,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said in Guwahati.
“We had not made the findings public while the NRC update process was underway believing that such a move could impact the entire process. Now that the process is over, we will have to look into the issue,” he further said.

The announcement assumes significance amid rumblings about a massive scam taking place during the NRC update with many pointing the finger of accusation at Prateek Hajela who was the NRC State Co-ordinator.
Incidentally, the Assam Public Works (APW) today lodged a complaint against Hajela with the CBI accusing the former State NRC Co-ordinator of “misappropriation of government money with his close aides”.
