Golaghat: There may be many crises but this one is unique. Due to unknown reasons an onion crisis has hit Golaghat, Assam. This has led to a rise in the price of onion to Rs. 20 per kilo in just two days. Prior to this allegedly, businessmen-created crisis, onion was retailing at Rs. 60-66 per kilo which is now retailing at Rs. 80 per kilo.
According to general public, for two days, onions disappeared from vegetable and grocery shops in Golaghat. Preliminary inquiry revealed that vehicles carrying onions weren’t landing in Golaghat. The onion that is being sold on Thursday has been brought from Jorhat and nearby towns. Thankfully, the price of potato has remained stable at Rs. 20 per kilo here in Golaghat.
Golaghat residents smell a rat in this whole crisis. They feel that it is an artificial crisis created by those dealing in onion supply and sale, and the government is not doing enough.
“Ordinary residents of Golaghat will have to stop consuming onions. It is getting costlier and is not available in many shops. The vendors are telling us that onion has not arrived. Someone is hiding it to increase the price. Also, garlic prices are at Rs.240 per kilo. The government is not giving any importance to common people’s day to day issues,” said one Golaghat resident, who was shopping veggies.
“For poor people like us these sky-rocketing prices are unbearable. The food supply minister sitting in AC-room should look into the matter as someone is definitely hiding the onions to create this crisis,” said another buyer.
This sudden and fake hike has given rise to many questions and the general public of Golaghat are unhappy with this supply mismanagement.
