Silchar shocker: Doctor allegedly removes male patient’s genitals without consent

The patient alleged that although he was supposed to have undergone a biopsy procedure, his entire genitals were removed by the surgeon named Dr Eden Sinha at RE Hospital in Silchar

A sensational allegation against a private nursing home and a surgeon of Silchar has led to shock, dismay and concern among people, and has yet again raised the issue of medical malpractices — the case in question now being seen as one of the worst of its kind in the entire Northeast in recent times.

A 27-year-old patient from Jiribam, Manipur, who had come to RE Hospital in Silchar to get an urinary issue treated, was shocked to see his entire male genitals removed by the doctor, that too without his consent.

Atikur Rahman had visited RE Hospital in Ghungoor locality of Silchar on May 19 this year where he met surgeon Dr Eden Sinha with the obvious hope of getting his urinary problem treated.

Rahman said that after preliminary tests, he was told to get admitted and was then advised a biopsy. He was told that a small amount of flesh would be taken from his genitals to which he agreed.

“I was told that it would be a small procedure and that I could be discharged the same day,” Rahman said. “However, when I regained sense, I found a catherer inserted into my genitalia. And when the bandages were removed after three days, I realised to my shock and horror that the entire genitals were removed,” he alleged, adding that no consent was taken, neither from him nor from his wife, to remove his penis although they were made to sign a few consent forms which he said they did.

Shocked and in dismay over what he was made to undergo in the name of getting his urinary condition treated, he tried to contact the doctor but could not.

While he found Dr Sinha’s mobile phone switched off, he got no reply to his initial messages.

A hospital staff who Rahman then contacted told him that Dr Sinha was in Mumbai.

The patient alleged that when he finally got in touch with Dr Sinha, he was not given a proper explanation as to why his genitals had to be amputated. He further alleged that he was threatened and intimidated by Dr Sinha who has refused to admit it as a case of wrong treatment.

Shockingly, although the biopsy was scheduled for May 19, Rahman said the specimen was taken on June 24, a month after his genital was removed.

“I am in extreme pain and distress. I had gone to several other doctors but nobody is willing to treat me and I have been advised to go back to Dr Eden Sinha. My life has been turned upside down. I can’t sit properly, neither can I walk or work. I have three children. Who will look after them now,” Atikur Rahman said.

“We want justice. I appeal to Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta BIswa Sarma to kindly provide him justice. The doctor and authorities of RE Hospital should either treat me to good health or provide me with adequate compensation,” an attendant of Rahman said.

The patient has lodged a complaint at Ghungoor Police Outpost based on which an FIR has been registered against against Dr Sinha.

A response from the surgeon concerned is awaited.
