Shubman Gill’s Historic Double Century Earns Praise from Sourav Ganguly: “opening was not his place”

PUBLISHED:

India’s young Test captain Shubman Gill has created history in Birmingham, and his brilliant performance is now being called a “masterclass” by none other than former captain Sourav Ganguly. Gill smashed a record-breaking 269 runs against England in the second Test, helping India take full control of the match. His double century is being praised as one of the finest knocks ever played by an Indian in English conditions.

Ganguly, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), couldn’t stop admiring Gill’s growth and calm presence at the crease. He wrote, “An absolute masterclass from Gill… just flawless. One of the best innings I have seen in England in any era. So much improvement in the last few months. Probably opening was not his place in Test cricket. A Test to win for India.”

It looks like the No.4 position, once ruled by legends like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, has found a new hero. Gill stepped into that slot in this series and delivered a knock that rewrote several records. With this double ton, he became the first Indian and the first Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England.

He also broke Virat Kohli’s 254* to become the Indian captain with the highest individual Test score and went past Tendulkar’s 241* as the highest by an Indian batter outside Asia. He even left behind Sunil Gavaskar’s famous 221 at The Oval to become the highest Indian scorer in Test cricket on English soil.

Speaking after his innings, the 25-year-old said, “This is the result of the work I put in before the series. I’m glad it’s paying off.” His patience, balance, and hunger for big scores were on full display.

India posted a massive total of 587 runs in the first innings, thanks to Gill’s knock. By the end of Day 2, Indian bowlers had already pushed England to 77 for 3, giving India a strong lead of 510 runs and a golden chance to level the series after the first Test loss at Headingley.
