Liverpool star Diogo Jota, married just 10 days ago, dies in car crash in Spain

Along with Liverpool FC’s Diogo Jota, his brother Andre Silva (26) also died in the accident in Zamora region of Spain

Liverpool forward and Portugal international Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain at the age of 28.

The footballer was reportedly travelling in a car with his brother Andre (26), also a professional footballer based in Portugal, when the vehicle went off the road in Zamora region of Spain before going up in flames.

Jota got married to his wife Rute Cardoso just 10 days back.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, this morning, in Spain,” NDTV quoted Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation, as saying in an official statement.

“Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself,” the statement further stated.

“Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club,” Premier League wrote on ‘X’.

Jota was signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

He also made 49 appearances for Portugal.
