Shubman Gill’s Century, Jaiswal’s Aggression Win Praise from Sachin Tendulkar in India’s Strong Start at Edgbaston

On the opening day of the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, young Indian stars Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill lit up the field with their brilliant performances, earning admiration from none other than cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

India, after making three changes to their playing eleven, decided to reshuffle the batting order to bring more strength. The strategy was quickly put to the test when KL Rahul was dismissed early. But Jaiswal walked in with confidence and style, taking on the English bowlers with fearless and smartly aggressive shots. He scored an elegant 87, laying a solid foundation for India’s innings. He also built two important partnerships — first with Karun Nair and then with Shubman Gill — both crossing the 50-run mark.

Sachin Tendulkar took to social media platform X and praised both batters. He wrote, “@ybj_19 set the tone from ball one. He was positive, fearless and smartly aggressive. @ShubmanGill was cool as ever, calm under pressure, solid in defence and in total control. Classy knocks from both. Well played, boys!”

While Jaiswal’s knock was eye-catching, it was Gill’s unbeaten century that truly anchored the Indian innings. The captain remained not out on 114 at stumps, showing great patience and skill, and steadied the innings during a brief collapse in the evening. He ended the day with a solid partnership of 99 runs with Ravindra Jadeja, who remained unbeaten on 41.

After the day’s play, Jaiswal spoke highly of his captain. “It’s incredible to see him bat. He has been amazing not just as a batter but also as a captain. He’s very clear about what he wants to do with the team. We are all confident and enjoying batting under him,” he said.

England’s Chris Woakes also acknowledged Gill’s effort, saying it felt like they almost got him out, but otherwise he was in full control. “Credit to him. It is a very good hundred and a big one for his team,” Woakes added.

By the end of Day 1, India reached 310/5, with hopes high for a big first innings total. Fans are excited to see how the young guns take the game forward in the coming days, especially with Shubman Gill leading from the front with such maturity.
