As India gets ready for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, some big team changes are expected. After losing the first match, the Indian team is looking to balance its lineup better with more all-rounders and a slightly shuffled batting order.
Washington Sundar is likely to come in as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan, who had a modest debut at Headingley. Though Sai showed promise with a 30-run knock in the second innings, his overall impact and a possible shoulder issue may have influenced this decision. Despite showing no discomfort during recent practice sessions, team management seems more focused on achieving the right balance for this match.
The batting order will be shuffled again. With Sai out, Karun Nair, who batted at No.6 in the last match, is expected to move up to No.3. Ravindra Jadeja will also move slightly higher in the lineup. India will be playing with three all-rounders — Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy (expected to replace Shardul Thakur), and Jadeja — as the team tries to strengthen both bowling and batting.
On the bowling side, Jasprit Bumrah will likely be rested. This is not due to injury, but as part of workload management, something the selectors had hinted at earlier. He may return for the third Test at Lord’s. Akash Deep is expected to take Bumrah’s place in the bowling attack, though it may make India’s pace attack slightly weaker.
India’s strategy for this match seems to focus more on spin, which makes sense given the dry conditions expected at Edgbaston. Captain Shubman Gill had earlier mentioned that on these kinds of pitches, where fast bowlers struggle to create chances, having a second spinner could be a good move. “If pacers can’t make things happen, a spinner can at least slow the run flow and create pressure,” he had said.
This approach shows that the team is willing to adapt quickly, especially after the loss in the first Test. They are not judging Sai Sudharsan harshly for his performance, but they are going with players who can add more flexibility to the playing XI.
Now the big question is whether these changes will help India level the series. With three all-rounders and a reshuffled top order, the team is taking a bold step to find the right balance between defense and attack.
