Eviction Drive in Nalbari, Assam: Nearly 100 houses constructed by encroachers on government land at Bakrikuchi village falling under Barkhetri LAC in Nalbari district of Assam were demolished during a massive eviction drive launched by the Nalbari district administration today (June 30).

The eviction drive was carried out to clear 450 bighas of government land which was under encroachment for nearly 10 years.

The entire exercise was peaceful, and police and central paramilitary forces were deployed in full strength since early Monday morning.

While bulldozers were used to raze down illegal houses, many encroachers voluntarily shifted to other places with their belongings.

“The entire excercise has been very successful and we have not faced any resistance from illegal settlers. In fact around 70% of the encroachers had already vacated the illegally-occupied land and moved to other places. We will now ensure that encroachers cannot settle down on government land,” Nalbari District Commissioner (DC) Nibedan Das Patowary told News Live.

The Assam Government, as part of its move to reclaim government land which have been under encroachment, has been launching a series of eviction drives in various parts of the State.
