In a big breakthrough in the recent grenade blast case at the CRPF camp in Bokakhat, Assam Police has arrested the main accused, Ankur Das. He was caught during a late-night operation by Bokakhat police from Dergaon. The action was quick and well-coordinated with help from the local administration.
This arrest is a major step in the investigation into the blast that happened on June 24 at the CRPF camp located in Sapjuri Panbari, Bokakhat. In that explosion, three Assam Police personnel were seriously injured. They were later identified as Siddhartha Borbora, Sushil Bhumij, and Mintu Hazarika. All three were rushed to Bokakhat Civil Hospital and are currently under treatment.
At first, the investigation pointed fingers at local poachers and drug dealers. But things took a serious turn when Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted at the possible role of the banned militant group ULFA (Independent) in the attack.
Along with Ankur Das, five more people have been arrested so far in connection with the blast. These include Rupjyoti Das (another key suspect from Bokakhat), Bhavesh Kalita from Tezpur, Sanjeev Baruah from Lakhimpur, and two brothers of Ankur — Pankaj Das and Kaku Das. All of them have been sent to judicial custody.
Assam DGP, while speaking to the media, said that the investigation is still going on and they cannot confirm yet whether the grenade was thrown using a car or any other vehicle. He added that all angles are being looked into carefully.
This grenade attack has shaken the region, especially since it took place inside a security camp. The fact that a possible ULFA-I link is being explored has made the case even more sensitive. People are waiting for more clarity, as the police continue to dig deeper into the case.
For now, the arrest of the prime accused is being seen as a positive step. The public and families of the injured jawans are hopeful that justice will be served soon.
