Volcano Eruption in Indonesia: People in parts of Indonesia witnessed a frightening natural event on Tuesday evening as Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, a volcano in East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted with great force. The eruption sent a huge ash cloud nearly 11 kilometres high into the sky, creating a mushroom-like shape that could be seen from 90 to 150 km away.
This strong volcanic activity sparked panic in nearby areas but thankfully, no injuries or damage have been reported so far.
When and Where It Happened
The eruption occurred around 5:35 PM local time on June 17, 2025. The volcano is located on Flores Island in south-central Indonesia, and it has erupted several times before. But this time, the scale of the eruption was much bigger, and the authorities immediately issued a red alert to warn people about the danger.
Video shared on social media showed thick orange volcanic ash and glowing materials rising high into the atmosphere, leaving many locals in fear. The sky turned dark, and the scene looked almost unreal.
How Dangerous Is It?
The Indonesian Geological Agency confirmed that the ash cloud reached up to 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) high. Due to heavy rainfall, there’s also a warning about possible lava flows through river channels connected to the volcano.
Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation. While this eruption didn’t cause any damage or flight delays, authorities have requested people living nearby to remain alert, especially with the threat of lava and ash mixing with rainwater.
A Look Back: Mount Lewotobi’s Past
This is not the first time Mount Lewotobi has erupted. In November 2024, at least 10 people lost their lives during a major eruption. That time, homes were destroyed, and the skies were filled with ash for several kilometres.
Mount Lewotobi is a stratovolcano, which means it’s built from layers of ash, lava, and rocks. It has a long history, with 19 recorded eruptions between 1675 and 1991, mostly from the Lewotobi Laki-laki vent. Two eruptions from the other vent, called Lewotobi Perempuan, were recorded as well. Eruptions in 1869 and 1907 caused the deaths of three people.
Authorities Stay Prepared
Even though no one was hurt this time, the eruption has reminded everyone how unpredictable and dangerous volcanoes can be. The disaster management team is on high alert, ready to evacuate people if the situation worsens.
People are also advised not to travel too close to the volcano or nearby rivers during the coming days, especially with rain likely to increase the risk of lahars (volcanic mudflows).
This powerful eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is a big reminder of how powerful nature is. Thankfully, this time no lives were lost, but the government and people are staying prepared. With such events becoming more frequent, being alert and following safety instructions can make a big difference.
