Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today (June 13) issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri in the wake of communal tensions in the Western Assam town amid increasing Islamic fundamentalist activities.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma said that necessary official orders would be issued by the government in the wake of the communal tensions in the town and its adjoining areas after beef and the severed head of a cow was recovered near the Hanuman Mandir on Eid.

“The law-and-order situation in Dhubri has been challenging since last week. Some anti-social elements kept the severed head of a cow in front of the Hanuman Mandir after Bakri Eid. People from both communities met and peace committees were formed as per discussions between both communities to resolve matters. But the next day, another severed head ofa cow was placed in front of the temple. Stone pelting incidents have also taken place further deteriorating the situation. Provocative posters were also put up by an outfit named Navin Bangla threatening to include Dhubri with Bangladesh. A communal force is trying to destabilise Dhubri and spread unrest. We have issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri after dusk from today and police have been told to shoot at criminals creating disturbances,” Dr Sarma told reporters after chairing an emergency meeting with top officials of the district administration and the police after arriving in Dhubri this morning.

“We will deploy RAF and CRPF personnel and strict action will be taken against criminal elements,” he added.

“I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, naamghars and sacred spaces. The incident of throwing beef at the town’s Hanuman Mandir should have NEVER happened, and those involved WON’T BE SPARED,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma further stated.

Prohibitory orders were earlier imposed in Dhubri town following the communal tensions. Police had to also use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
