Following the victory in Munich, PSG ended their decades-long wait for a UEFA Champions League title

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) clinched their first-ever UEFA Champions League title, thrashing Inter Milan 5–0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday night (May 31).

Incidentally, it’s the heaviest loss for any team in the finals of Europe’s elite tournament.

PSG’s triumph also marked the end of their search for a Champions League crown after having finished runner-up in 2020 following their 0-1 defeat at the hands of German giants Bayern Munich in the final played at Lisbon.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring in the 12th minute against his former club and also refrained from celebrating the goal against the Italian giants.
  • 19-year-old Désiré Doué netted two goals in the 20th and 63rd minutes besides also providing an assist to earn the Man of the Match award.
  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in the 73rd and Senny Mayulu netted in the 86th minute sealing the emphatic win.

ROAD TO THE FINAL

PSG’s journey to the title was marked by resilience and determination. After finishing 15th in the league phase, they advanced through the knockout rounds by defeating Brest, Liverpool (via penalties), Aston Villa, and Arsenal.

WHAT THE VICTORY MEAN FOR PSG

  • PSG completed a continental treble, having already secured the Ligue 1 and Coupe de France titles earlier in the season.
  • Manager Luis Enrique became only the second coach to win the treble with two different clubs, having previously achieved this feat with Barcelona in 2015.
  • This final was notable for being the first since 2004 without representation from English, Spanish, or German clubs.

EMOTIONAL MOMENTS

In a heartfelt gesture, Luis Enrique dedicated the victory to his late daughter, Xana, adding an emotional layer to the celebration.
