Sankar Jyoti Baruah was arrested on May 19 in connection with an alleged scuffle that took place at BN Singh petrol depot in Duliajan
Sankar Jyoti Baruah gets bail: The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted bail to former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah in the Duliajan petrol depot case.
Baruah was arrested on May 19 in connection with an alleged scuffle that took place at BN Singh petrol depot in Duliajan.
His arrest had drew sharp criticism across Assam after several organizations accused police bias after the former AASU leader was arrested while no action was taken against Tanu Shahi, daughter of the family running the petrol depot, who was accused of making derogatory comments against Assamese people.
Several organizations, including the Bir Lachit Sena, had called for a Duliajan Bandh while Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha was taken into preventive detention near Moran while he was on his way to Duliajan from Sivasagar to take part in protests demanding Tanu Shahi’s arrest and the immediate release of Sankar Jyoti Baruah.
