Harmeet Singh appointed permanent Assam DGP

Harmeet Singh is a 1992-batch IPS officer and was holding temporary charges until his full-time appointment as DGP of Assam today (May 20)

IPS officer Harmeet Singh has been appointed full-time DGP of Assam.

The Home Department of the Government of Assam, through a notification, announced the appointment of Harmeet Singh, who has been officiating as the top cop of Assam after GP Singh was posted as CRPF Director General.

“In the interest of public service, Shri Harmeet Singh, IPS (RR-1992), Director General of Police (i/c), Assam and Director General of Civil Defence & Commandant General of Home Guards, Assam, is promoted and posted as Director General of Police, Assam… with effect from the date of taking over charge,” the notification issued by the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home & Political Department, Dispur, stated.

The Assam government had earlier on January 27 this year asked Harmeet Singh, then the Special DGP, to look after the current duties of the DGP in addition to his existing responsibilities temporarily till the appointment of a regular incumbent is made.

Gyanendra Pratap Singh, a 1991-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer, had officiated as the Director General of Police of Assam for two years after being appointed for the top post on February 1, 2023.
