PUBLISHED:

Acclaimed Assamese singer Gayatri Hazarika passed away at the Nemcare Hospitals in Guwahati today (May 16).

She was suffering from colon cancer and was only 44 years old at the time of her untimely demise.

“It’s a very sad day for all of us. We have lost Gayatri Hazarika. She passed away at our hospital at 2:15 pm today. She was suffering from cancer and was undergoing treatment at our hospital. She was admitted three days ago after her condition deteriorated and had to be admitted to the ICU yesterday where she breathed her last,” Dr Hitesh Baruah, Managing Director of Nemcare Hospitals, told News Live.

Best known for her critically-acclaimed song ‘Xora Pate Pate Phagun Naame….‘, her death has cast a pall of gloom in the musical and entertainment industry in the State.

Two other songs that touched a chord with audiences and listeners are ‘Rati Rati Mor Xoon’ and ‘Ohar Dore Ubhoti Aatori Gola‘.

“I rushed to Nemcare Hospital after learning about Gayatri’s demise. She was a very talented singer. Her death, that too at such a young age, will create an irreplaceable void in the music industry,” music composer Jayanta Kakoty told News Live.

The mortal remains of the acclaimed singer would be kept at the AASU headquarters Swahid Nyas from 6 to 8 pm today where AASU leaders and members and other people will pay their last respects.

The cremation will take place at Nabagraha crematorium in the city later tonight.
