CBI arrests Oil India Limited DGM for taking Rs 7 lakh bribe: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Oil India Limited, Duliajan, along with another high-ranking officer of a private drilling firm, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 7 lakh.
The CBI, in a statement issued today (May 5), stated that it has arrested Prayas Chakravorty, Deputy General Manager, Oil India Ltd (OIL), Duliajan, Assam, and Jyoti Kumar Singh, DGM (Sales & Marketing) of M/s. United Drilling Tools Ltd, for taking the Rs 7 lakh bribe.
CBI also stated that from the Rs 7 lakh bribe, the arrested Oil India DGM purchased gold worth Rs 3.73 lakh.
The CBI statement stated that the bribe was demanded by Oil India DGM Prayas Chakravorty and paid to him for facilitating issuance of award of work and clearance of bills of private contractors/suppliers.
“A case was registered by CBI on 03.05.2025 against four accused including Deputy General Manager of Oil India Ltd (OIL), Duliajan, Assam; Managing Director & DGM (Sales & Marketing) of Noida based private company; said private company and unknown public servants on allegations that accused public servant in connivance with accused DGM (Sales & Marketing) of Noida based private company and unknown public servants, had been indulging in corrupt and illegal activities of obtaining undue-advantage/ bribe in-lieu of facilitating the issuance of award of work and clearance of bills of the said private contractors/ suppliers, thereby making huge wrongful gains to themselves and corresponding wrongful loss to the Union Exchequer,” the release, a copy of which has been received by News Live, stated.
The release further stated that the “accused public servant also demanded 70 grams of Gold Ornaments for himself as well as for some other unknown public servant from accused DGM of said private company in-lieu of award of certain contract in favour of him. Accused private person, allegedly, informed accused Public Servant that due to some reason, he won’t be able to purchase gold and therefore, he would deliver Rs. 7 lakh in cash, instead”.
It was further alleged that accused Managing Director of the private company arranged the bribe amount of Rs 7 lakh for delivering it to accused Public Servant and delivered the same to him out of which, accused public servant purchased gold coins worth Rs. 3,73,550/- from a shop in Noida and carried home the remaining cash amount of Rs. 3.34 lakh with him the same day, the CBI sttaed in its statement.
CBI thereafter laid a trap and caught Prayas Chakravorty, the accused Oil India DGM, red-handed with Rs. 3.34 lakh cash (approx.) and documents related to the purchase of gold from his possession.
Chakravorty and Jyoti Kumar Singh, DGM (Sales & Marketing) of M/s. United Drilling Tools Ltd, were arrested.
The arrested duo were later produced in the court of Special Judge (CBI) at Ghaziabad.
Searches were also conducted at the residential and official premises of Oil India DGM Prayas Chakravorty at various places in Delhi, Noida, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia which led to recovery of gold jewellery (obtained as bribe), over 30 lakh cash (from private persons), mobile devices and several incriminating documents.
Further investigation in the case, the CBI stated, is underway.
