Sumi Pradhan, who died in the hit-and-run accident, used to work at a pharmacy in Gohpur
A sensational hit-and-run accident near Gohpur in Assam’s Biswanath district resulted in the tragic death of a young woman whose marriage was scheduled to have taken place on the 15th day of the Assamese month of Bohag (April 29 according to the Gregorian calendar) while her friend is battling for life at the Swahid Kanaklata Baruah Civil Hospital.
Sumi Pradhan was pillion riding with her friend Tutumoni Nath in the latter’s two-wheeler bearing registration number AS-12-Z-8945 when they were knocked down by a speeding four-wheeler at Borigaon on the National Highway 15 today (April 20) morning.
Sumi died on the spot, an eyewitnesses told News Live.
The speeding vehicle which was on its way from Arunachal Pradesh fled towards Lakhimpur after committing the accident, the eyewitness further said.
The deceased used to work at a private pharmacy in Gohpur and had gone out with her friend in the morning when the accident took place.
“It was around 8:50 am when I heard a loud sound while travelling through the highway on my motorcycle. I saw a black Scorpio speeding away towards Lakhimpur after knocking the two-wheeler. A young woman named Sumi Pradhan apparently died on the spot while her friend named Tutumoni Nath was seriously injured,” the eyewitness said.
A Police team which arrived at the accident spot transported the body of the deceased to the morgue for a necessary post mortem while rushing the injured girl to the Swahid Kanaklata Baruah Civil Hospital at Gohpur.
Efforts are underway to track the vehicle involved in the accident and arrest the driver.
