A woman from Uttar Pradesh who eloped with her daughter’s fiancé 9 days before their wedding says she wants to remain with him and that her relationship with him is “lifelong”.

The 40-year-old woman named Anita Devi, who had eloped with her to-be son-in-law just nine days prior to their wedding, was apprehended near the Nepal border in Bihar along with the youth and were later brought back to Aligarh for questioning.

Anita had eloped with her daughter’s would-be husband Rahul (25) before the wedding which was fixed on April 16 leading to a frantic search for them after their fleeing together came to the fore.

The woman’s family members said she eloped along with the jewellery they had bought for the wedding along with around Rs 3 lakh in cash.

Anita was secretly planning to elope with Rahul and was in constant touch with him over phone which, incidentally, was gifted to her by her to-be-son-in-law-turned-paramour, media reports had earlier stated.

“The boy my daughter was supposed to marry rarely spoke to her. Instead, he would spend nearly 20–22 hours a day talking to my wife. I live in Bengaluru for work and only recently returned to the village. When I saw this closeness, I grew suspicious,” India Today quoted Jitendra, the woman’s husband, as saying after the duo fled.

“Don’t try to find me,” Rahul, the groom-to-be, had reportedly called his father after he eloped with his would-be mother-in-law.

The woman, meanwhile, said that she will not return to her husband since he was a drunkard and used to harass and torture her.

“She told me that her family was harassing her. I just wanted to help her.” Rahul, with whom she had eloped, said and added that they now intend to get married and settle down.
