A local politician named Faheem Khan belonging to the Minority Development Party has been arrested for “inciting” the Nagpur violence
GUWAHATI, March 19: Following the Nagpur violence, curfew continues to be clamped in 10 police station limits for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.
Over 50 people were taken into custody after violence flared up in the city over protests against Aurangzeb’s tomb.
Meanwhile, Nagpur Police today (March 19) arrested a local politician named Faheem Khan on charges of “inciting” the violence.
Khan, a politician of the Minority Development Party, has been sent to police custody till Friday.
Violence began on Monday over rumours that a holy book had been desecrated during a demonstration in the city by protesters seeking the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb located in Khuldabad in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (former Aurangabad) district.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the violence was a “premeditated conspiracy” by unknown persons.
He also said that the Vicky Kaushal-starrer movie ‘Chhaava‘, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, reignited people’s emotions against Aurangzeb.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), meanwhile, said on Tuesday that it won’t tolerate any attempts at glorification of Aurangzeb after protests against the Mughal emperor’s tomb triggered the violence.
