Drunken brawls, stabbing death mar Holi festivities in Guwahati

A number of drunken brawls were reported in Guwahati and other parts of the State dampening Holi festivities

GUWAHATI, March 16: Holi festivities in Guwahati were dampened by drunken brawls and an incident of stabbing which led to the death of a person while the body of a girl was recovered near Dighalipukhuri.

After videos of a girl in drunken stupor creating nuisance in Guwahati’s wireless locality shocked people, incidents of other drunken brawl have soured the festival of colours which should, otherwise, have been full of fun, frolic and merriment.

A 35-year-old man was stabbed to death at Bhairab Baba Path in South Basistha Nagar area of the capital city after he reportedly objected to have colours smeared on him.

The deceased has been identified as Tabu Das while the alleged murderer, who has been arrested by police, has been identified as Nripen Chandra Das.

Although people of the locality rushed Tabu to hospital after he was stabbed with a sharp knife, he succumbed to his injuries.

Another person was reportedly injured in the incident.

On the other hand, the body of a 22-year-old girl was recovered near the Dighalipukhuri pond yesterday evening.

The deceased, identified as Diphsikha Nath of Satgaon, was missing since Sunday morning.

No arrests have, however, been made in connection with the incident with police investigating whether she was murdered or she died due to other reasons.

On the other hand, videos of another incident of drunken brawl has shocked people of Guwahati. A group of youths numbering around 10 in number, were seen assaulting another person near Narengi.

The group of youths assaulted the youth, identified as Jayanta Talukdar, who is now admitted to GATE Hospital in Mathgharia, Guwahati, in a serious condition.

Six attackers — Biswajit Das, Ajit Bahadur, Gulshan Singh, Gautam Rai, Devesh Rai, Roshan Rai and Pankaj Rai — have been detained by Noonmati Police while they are on the look out for three other attackers who were involved in the assault that took place in front of police personnel.

Meanwhile, Chandmari Police detained four persons in connection with the incident of alleged assault on a singer named Rishi Baruah.

They were, however, later let-off after being served with a notice to cooperate with further investigations, if required.
