Assam immersed in Holi festivities with people smearing colours on one another

GUWAHATI, March 14: Assam immersed in Holi festivities and joined the rest of India as people smeared colours on one another besides extending Holi wishes to family members, friends and relatives.

People were seen visiting the homes of relatives, friends and neighbours, and applying colours on their faces, as they extended Holi wishes to others.

Meanwhile, Barpeta Satra witnessed huge footfall with people congregating in large numbers for the four-day ‘Doul Mahotsav’ that got underway yesterday.

While the inaugural day was observed as ‘Gandho Utsab’, today and tomorrow will be celebrated as Bhardoul while the concluding day will be observed as Xuweri.

Traditional Holi songs resonated the air with people from far and wide making a beeline to the seat of Vaishnavaite culture and learning for the Doul Mahotsav.

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited Barpeta on the occasion of Doul Mahotsav and wished people a very happy Holi.

Meanwhile, a five-day Doul Utsav is being organized at the Sri Sri Doul Govinda Temple in North Guwahati.

Doul Utsav is also being celebrated in other satras across Assam.

On the other hand, Fancy Bazaar, the commercial hub of Guwahati, came abuzz on Holi as revellers danced to the tunes of DJ music and smeared colours on each others.

Holika Dahan was also celebrated in Fancy Bazaar yesterday (March 13), marking the beginning of Holi.

Meanwhile, adequate security arrangements have also been made for the festival of colours with police and administration authorities asking people to celebrate a safe Holi and to not throw colours on pedestrians and avoid drink driving.
