GUWAHATI, Feb 27: There seems to be one question people across the world and more particularly in the US are asking: Will US get a new $250 currency note with the face of US President Donald Trump on it?
Well the question sprang up after South Carolina’s Republican lawmaker Joe Wilson made a bizarre proposal to cement President Donald Trump’s position in American history, and drafted a proposal to launch a new $250 currency note with Trump’s face on it.
Calling Trump “the most valuable president,” the Congressman said his proposed currency note will not only honour the US President’s legacy but also serve as a practical purpose in tackling what he referred to as “Bidenflation.”
“Grateful to announce that I am drafting legislation to direct the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design a $250 bill featuring Donald J. Trump. Bidenflation has destroyed the economy forcing American families to carry more cash. Most valuable bill for most valuable President!” Wilson wrote on ‘X’, and shared a digitally edited image of Trump on the proposed $250 currency bill.
But is it possible, or even legal, to feature Trump on US banknotes?
If any legislation gets passed to make it a law, the $250 bill would be the highest-denomination legal tender in US currency.
However, reports said, the bill is yet to be introduced, and a timeline for its introduction has also not been established.
And the major obstacle to Wilson’s proposal is a law that explicitly forbids living people from being featured on US money.
“No portrait shall be placed upon any of the bonds, securities, notes, fractional or postal currency of the United States, while the original of such portrait is living,” a federal statute passed in 1866 states.
In case Wilson, or the Trump administration wishes to go forward they will first have to amend the law itself.
