‘Will hell let loose?’ Rare sighting of ‘Doomsday fish’ sparks alarm among netizens

GUWAHATI, Feb 21: Beachgoers were left stunned in Baja California Sur in Mexico after an oarfish, also nicknamed the ‘doomsday fish’, was sighted in the shallow waters of Mexico’s Pacific coast.

The odd-looking fish, the non-profit environmental advocacy group Ocean Conservancy says, is “seen as being harbingers of bad news, particularly disasters or destruction.”

The bad omen theory was sparked after around 20 oarfish were washed ashore prior to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Japan in 2011.

Netizens, meanwhile, were quick to react, flooding social media with their views on the issue.

While one user said the mysterious “doomsday fish” emerges only when disaster is near, another questioned what might be going on in the depths of the ocean that has led to them coming ashore.

Experts, however, disagree with the claim that sightings are linked to impending disasters, saying changes in their surroundings and other factors force these creatures to come to the surface.
